MOST OF US know by now that regular, old-fashioned glitter is made from plastic and aluminium, is not environmentally friendly and is a microplastic.

In fact, the European Union banned loose plastic glitter in October 2023 as part of its ongoing crackdown on microplastics. Glastonbury and other big festivals have banned non-biodegradable glitter.

Is biodegradable glitter legit – or is it just greenwashing? It can be a minefield to navigate, and not all biodegradable glitters are made the same.

Luckily, our LIVING GLITTER is EU compliant and environmentally friendly. So much so, that legendary environmentalist David Attenborough has endorsed the science behind it.

Here's some more about our zero-guilt glitter...

TINTYKIT's LIVING GLITTER is made from Bioglitter® – the 'world's only certified freshwater biodegradable glitter brand', as certified by TÜV Austria’s fresh water certification.

What this means is that our biodegradable glitter is designed to break down quickly and safely in freshwater environments. It will naturally break down where microorganisms are present. It has received one of the highest certifications in the world. Bioglitter® does not dissolve in your average water — but once it enters a natural environment (such as freshwater or a field), bacteria and other natural microorganisms will consume the glitter, turning it into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass.

LIVING GLITTER is made with sustainably and ethically sourced natural and plant derived materials as its basis rather than plastic. It's cosmetic grade – meaning it is suitable for use in cosmetic and personal care, around your eyes and for nail and body art.

Here are some of the benefits of using our TINTYKIT biodegradable glitter:

  • It is environmentally friendly. Biodegradable glitter will not pollute waterways or harm marine life.
  • It is safe for use on skin. Biodegradable glitter is made from natural ingredients and is safe to use on skin, nails and hair.
  • It is just as sparkly as traditional glitter. Biodegradable glitter is available in a wide variety of colours, and it is just as sparkly as traditional glitter.

Here are some of the drawbacks of using biodegradable glitter:

  • It can be more expensive than traditional glitter. Biodegradable glitter is made from more expensive materials than traditional glitter, so it can be more expensive to purchase.
  • It may not be as readily available as traditional glitter. Biodegradable glitter is not as widely available as traditional glitter, so you may need to search a little harder to find it.
